New fund launched to buy moving image work

The Art Fund in partnership with Thomas Dane Gallery has launched the Moving Image Fund for Museums in order to support the acquisition of artists’  film and video works by museums.

The first two galleries to benefit from the fund are Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne and Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester. The scheme, which is currently in its pilot phase, will provide £200,000 to each gallery over the next two years.

Reopened Whitworth breaks annual visitors’ record

Over 180,000 people have visited the newly expanded Manchester gallery since it reopened in February following the completion of £15m refurbishment, smashing its previous highest annual visitor figure in just three months.

Manchester’s Whitworth Art Gallery is celebrating after smashing their previous annual attendance record – just 14 weeks after reopening following refurbishment. They have welcomed 181,000 visitors in just over three months, topping their previous highest annual figure of 178,996 for the whole of 2011.

Now open - Refurbished Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester

A 45-metre-long gunpowder installation by the Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, photographs of Young British Artists at play on the Greek Island of Hydra and a new art garden filled with works by artists such as Nathan Coley are all part of the newly refurbished Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, which unveils its £15m redevelopment project Saturday, 14 February.
