Nottingham Art Map Launches

A new website has just launched to highlight the remarkable art on show in Nottingham - It lists 18 key and influential venues around the city which range from the large public spaces, such as Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham Castle and New Art exchange, through artist lead exhibition spaces, to private galleries and smaller venues.

An initiative by Bonington Gallery and supported by Nottingham Trent University, it gives each venue control of what they list, so should be very up to date.  If you take a look at the moment (September) you will see that many of the space are hosting the New Contemporaries.

There is a map, description of each exhibition space and directions to reach them.

Nottingham clearly has a remarkable contemporary cultural network and punches above its weight in this area - unsurprisingly Bonington Gallery, Nottingham Trent and its city partners have put together a clean, sophisticated and most importantly, useful, listings site which should be in your bookmarks from now on.  You don't have to go to London all the time!!  Many exhibitions start in Nottingham and THEN tour to London - the last British art show and the current New Contemporaries being key examples.

New Contemporaries Opens in Nottingham

Nottingham clearly punches above its weight as far as contemporary art goes.  This vibrant art community, with its successful private and public galleries, art courses and artists led studios, not only attracted the the British Art show last time, but now hosts the New Contemporaries 2015.

Selected this year by Simon Starling, Jessie Flood-Paddock and Hurvin Anderson, the work is on show at a number of key artist run studio spaces around the city.  It previewed on 17th September and is open from 18th Seotember.

Catherine Mears

Not surprisingly, our first featured artist would be someone just around the corner from!

Catherine Mears is a designer/maker based in Nottingham, specialising in a range of unique kiln-formed glass work. Encapsulated text and imagery add depth and detail to her work which can be commissioned to suit any occasion.

Apart from stunning objects such as bowls and place mats, Catherine introduced her 'Captured in Glass' range – where she will place into glass forms your text, photo or imagery to produce a unique, deeply personal and special gift, perfect for any occasion. Text and imagery can be produced by the client if they want to put their creative skills to the test. Or Catherine will create a piece based on a client's needs, and any materials provided to her.

Each piece is handmade, unique and tailored to a client's needs and vision.

As an independent artist, Cath knows about maximising her resources and admitted, in a recent conversation, that she acquires much of her packing material from the local ASDA fruit isle. They discard piles of perfectly clean and usable bubble wrap each day as they unpack the fruit and veg. Cath just pops along and relieves them of, what for them, is rubbish. This saves her a fortune and allows her to transport her fragile glass pieces to shows and exhibitions safely.
