Wix has grown massively since its launch almost 10 years ago and now has over 58 million users.
It originally started life as a service which used Flash, Adobe's proprietary animation and display software. This made for some very fancy and sophisticated sites as making work with Flash is normally a complex process but Wix make it simple with a large selection of templates and 'Drag and Drop' editing. Over the years they have realised that 'Flash' isn't everything - you can't use it on an iPad for example, so all of there sites can also be seen using HTML5, the new web standard.
You can have an animated site up and running in a few minutes and include sound, video, movement and smooth transitions. Not surprisingly, it has attracted quite a few folk from the visual community and if you browse their featured sites, made using the Wix system, there are a lot of photographers, designers and people working in the visual arts.
Their free account is flexible and will have you up and running very quickly. However, if you need more you can pay. Their 'Unlimited' account, for entrepreneurs and freelancers, costs £7.76 per month giving you 10GB of storage space and unlimited monthly bandwidth. They have other packages which offer a variety of pricing and facilities, so take a look to find the one which gives you the most for the least outlay. No reason to pay for more than you need.
They provide eCommerce packages so you can set up an elegant online shop or there is a smaller 'Combo' package with less storage for a small, personal site. There are apps which you can add onto your site to offer more functionality and, on the whole, they provide a very flexible and professional service.
Started in 2006, it has its headquarters in New York and Tel Aviv. Why, you may ask, is it called 'Wix' - well (something here for the branding experts to ponder) ..."it was an easy three-letter word with an available URL (web address)".
One of our advisors, Peter Schulberg, uses the paid-for version of Wix to host his Eco-LA gallery website, so to see a live version of what people can do with Wix, take a look. www.eco-logicalart.org
