Blurb help you make beautiful books. Founded in 2005 by Eileen Gittins she wanted the company to address a need for a simple, affordable way for individuals to publish their own books.
They were something of a pioneer and have moved with the times. Not only can they make you quality print-on-demand books but have grown into a publishing platform with bookshop and ebook distribution.
Their quality really is exceptional and they were one of the first online book publishers to offer premium papers to produce image wrap hardcover binding. The books certainly have a classy look and feel.
We have seen many produced by artists as a way of collecting or archiving projects, or for short run self-published catalogues.
It is now possible to make hardcover, softcover, and ebook editions of a book from a single master file and, if you have ever tried to do this separately, you will know what a challenge it can be. It does mean you can possibly tap into a range of marketing platforms. The cost of a full colour print book can be prohibitive to some buyers, but they may then opt for a cheaper electronic version.
There are tools and advice on the site including Bookwright, hich helps you set up and publish ebooks, magazines or print books; Online Photo Books were you can upload individual images or extract them from Facebook, Flickr and Instagram; Booksmart, for simplified layout of photo books.
There are also plug-ins for Adobe Indesign and Lightroom. All are free to download and use. If you can’t be dealing with all that flexibility you can opt for a number of free ‘starter’ templates.
They are not the cheapest, but you do get what you pay for.
