Unbound is unusual in the filed in that it is VERY specific and only funds publications.  

A crowdfunding site for writers who fancy an ‘alternative’ way of getting together with readers who might like to fund their next book! It wants to give both authors and readers a greater say in which books get published and it functions very much like many of the current, and successful, crowdfunding sites.

Authors pitch their ideas, readers pledge money and, once the potential publication has enough supporters, the book gets written and each supporter receives either an ebook version or limited edition hard or paperback.

What is interesting is that if you cough up some support you can ‘watch’ how the creative juices flow (or dribble) in an author’s private space (their 'shed') on the site.  There you can read the author’s blog, watch interviews and meet other, like-minded, supporters.

If you really fancy pushing the boat out and promise a lot of cash, then you get an invite to the book launch!!

Unsurprisingly,  Unbound was founded by three writers: Dan Kieran, Justin Pollard & John Mitchinson and is both a funding platform and a publisher, fulfilling all the normal publishing functions.

If you are a new artists then this online publication is a 'must' to delve into.

Produced by a-n, The Artists Information Company, it brings together a wealth of relevant professional information aimed at new graduates.  There are sections on your use of the Internet, with a profile of web savvy artist Ellie Harrison; a look at some of the options which might be available to you; applying for opportunities; setting up your own studio or studio group and where to go to find other, relevant, information.

a-n produces consistently excellent material - it is well worth noodling around their website - and 'Signpost ' is going to be invaluable to new and developing artists.

Q-art is aimed at prospective students, graduates, self-trained artists and all those with an interest in art. They attempt to break down the barriers to and between various models of art education and make the workings of the contemporary art world more transparent. 

Q-art run cross college crits and events at , conducts research into good practice within art education and published (digital and paper) a number of pithy books on art crit and art school courses.

There are some really valuable videos, commissioned by Q-art discussing issues which deal with art school teaching and art crits.  Well worth having a look at.

Issuu - provide full-colour animated books and catalogues online, completely free of charge.

We love this service but were not quite sure where to place it. Perhaps it should have been in the Portfolio section as you can use it to promote your work online (a little like a print-shaped portfolio or website) and allow people to download it.  But it is also a pseudo book or catalogue so we placed it in Publishing.

Remarkably simple, you lay out your book using any design or desktop publishing system, convert the finished project to a pdf file (now almost universal as a digital format) and then upload it to Issuu. The result is a fully animated, ‘book’, ‘magazine’ or ‘catalogue’ which visitors to the site can ‘flip’ through by clicking to turn the pages.  

The book 'feel' is remarkable and apart from Issuu giving you a free account and placing your publication on a personal ‘book shelf’, they also give you a web link to send to people so they can visit your page directly. You can also embed the publication into your website or blog with all the animation effects. Visitors to this version can click to enlarge and view the publication ‘full screen’. 

The service is free but branded with the Issuu logo and served by links to other ‘relevant’ Issuu publications, which is a small price to pay for an innovative service like this. If you want to remove the Issuu logo and ads, there is a paid version.

Large publishers are using the service to preview their books and hundreds of artists and photographers can be found on the platform as well as a mass of commercial magazines.



Lulu - is a print-on-demand service which allows you to upload your publication and sell it via their website.

The advantages are enticing. Visitors to their site can find your publication as they browse through the categories or search the collections.  They can preview parts of the book online, place an order, pay with a card and Lulu handles all of it.

Once someone buys your publication, Lulu takes the payment, prints the item and ships it to the buyer. They take a cut of the sale price and give you 80%. The main advantage here is that you do not have to finance a large print run, store the resulting publications and then sell and distribute them.

They are one of the leading providers in the field and have published over a million and a half books since 2002.

Thousands of new titles are uploaded onto the site each day and they have around one million authors selling to 100 countries, so there is certainly a global market place here.  They also offer

They allow you to publish books, photo books, CDs and DVDs and you can buy your own ISBN number to help with identification and listings at other publisher outlets. There is also an option to allow digital downloads in the form of e-books, if you want to distribute electronically.  Using Lulu you can sell via Amazon, Barns & Nobel and iBooks.  It seems that publishers who use both paper and electronic services sell 30% more!
